Our Management Approach

Due to the nature of our business, we work with a diverse set of suppliers, from family farm partners who raise our chickens and hogs to multinational companies that manufacture and provide services for our production facilities. We work in partnerships with over 17,300 suppliers to provide the highest-quality input.

Recognizing that sustainability impacts vary across our supply chain, we tailor our approach based on factors such as materials, livestock species, and services provided. We prioritize long-term relationships built on trust and shared values, as well as those that foster continuous improvement in our sourcing programs and contribute positively to our sustainability goals.

Pilgrim's employs a centralized procurement structure in the U.S. through our JBS USA corporate offices, with dedicated teams embedded within our global business units. This structure, led by Heads of Procurement specializing in specific product or service categories, allows us to maximize vendor relationships, ensure consistency, and leverage our scale for greater impact.

Our Supplier Standards

Our Supplier Code of Conduct outlines our expectations for all suppliers, covering crucial areas such as human rights, labor practices, environmental responsibility, and business integrity. Our supplier evaluation process considers various factors, including compliance, risk management, quality, reliability, financial stability, and reputation. We prioritize local sourcing whenever possible to support local economies and prefer working directly with companies' local offices.

To ensure food safety and quality, all suppliers providing products or services in direct contact with food must obtain certification from the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) or an equivalent body. This certification process, which we defer to organizations like GFSI to manage and refine, includes rigorous audits and verification procedures.

In Europe, we require our food contact material and packaging suppliers to use the SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) platform to report audited social and environmental data. This information is a key component of our comprehensive supplier audit program, which evaluates performance on a range of critical issues.

To ensure compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct, all suppliers must grant Pilgrim’s Europe or our designated representatives access for on-site inspections and to all relevant records. If any issues are identified, we work with the supplier to implement a corrective action plan to resolve the non-compliance and drive performance improvement. This integrated approach allows us to effectively manage supply chain risks and foster collaboration with our partners.

Poultry Suppliers

In 2024, Pilgrim’s partnered with 5,175 U.S., Mexican, and European poultry family farm* partners to maintain our standards of excellence. While we do own several farms in the U.S. and U.K., we mostly partner with contract farmers to provide poultry and feed, technical, and veterinary services.

We audit a subset of our U.S. family farm partners according to Animal Welfare Program requirements, conducted by internal Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organizations certified team members and third-party auditors. In Mexico, every farm is audited in compliance with government standards, including those set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Mexico-U.S. Commission for the Prevention of Diseases and Other Exotic Animal Diseases, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural resources, and State Civil Protection. In Europe, all poultry farms are Red Tractor approved and audited by independent, approved certification bodies.

For purchased meats, Pilgrim's Europe Chicken operates under a Policy for Supply Chain Assurance, which ensures products come from suppliers who meet Red Tractor or equivalent standards. Pilgrim's Europe Chicken also established a Responsible Sourcing Soy Policy. This initiative is crucial as we build trust among our customers, team members, investors, and other stakeholders. We continue to develop our Responsible Sourcing agenda and work with supply chain partners to increase transparency in sourcing.

*We define a “family farm” as any farm organized as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or family corporation where the majority of the business is owned and controlled by a person and their relatives.
