Our Commitment

Pilgrim’s is committed to helping society meet the global challenge of feeding a growing population in an environmentally responsible manner by improving the efficiency of our operations and minimizing our environmental impact. As part of our sustainability strategy, we have established several goals:

  • Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040*

  • Reduce Scope 1 & 2 GHG emission intensity by 30% by 2030 vs. 2019 baseline

  • Reach 60% renewable electricity by 2030

  • Reduce water use intensity by 2030 vs. 2019 baseline

*When used, “net zero by 2040” or “net zero by 2040 goal” shall mean the company’s goal to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2040. This goal spans the company’s global operations, as well as its diverse value chain of agricultural producer partners, suppliers and customers, and all other third parties in the company’s value chains. Whether the company is successful in achieving this very ambitious goal will depend on numerous factors outside of the company’s control, including but not limited to: legal and regulatory changes by local governments, technological innovations and infrastructures, energy advancements, economic and environmental conditions, climate change impacts, force majeures, social and cultural factors, international agreements and global trends, financial markets, collaborations and partnerships, and the resources and efforts of those in our value chains. Because of these variables, among others, the company may not be able to achieve net zero by 2040.

Our Approach

Our Environmental Policy guides our approach, and we instill a sense of accountability amongst our team members to adhere to the policy. Globally, the policy is reinforced by Pilgrim’s executive management and overseen and governed by our environmental teams. In-plant personnel directly oversee the policy during environmental reporting to ensure implementation. To ensure we continue to drive progress, we tie senior executive compensation considerations to performance against environmental goals.

Across the globe, our facilities operate in compliance with relevant laws and regulations and, in most cases, in accordance with internally audited environmental management systems (EMS). Our EMS are based on ISO 14001 standards, which 32 Pilgrim’s facilities received third-party certification against in 2023.

In 2023, we began implementation of Envizi ®, a global sustainability data management system, across our operations. This platform will be the single source of data around facility performance related to Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions, energy, fuel, water, wastewater, and waste, as well as Scope 3 emissions and source data. This standardization enables us to increase oversight frequency from our Board of Directors and executive leadership.

As a global food company, we are committed to minimizing reliance on natural resources, improving resource conversation, and protecting the environment through all steps of our processes at Pilgrim’s.
